How to reduce OMEGAMON overhead?

Hi community members.
Could you please share your experience of reducing OMEGAMON overhead?
We use IBM OMEGAMON XE for DB2 PE V5R3M0 with DB2 11, z/OS:02.02.00

What level of z/OS Are you running?

What overhead are you seeing in Omegamon?

Is the overhead occur more when you have certain workload running?

Have you had a review of the timeframes the overhead occurs?

Is it the same time of day? Or same workload?

What about WLM? Have you reviewed it with your capacity planning or z/OS System programmer?

Anything else occurring when you see this overhead?

Are you current on all maintenance for z/OS, DB2 and Omegamon?

The more details you can provide, the better the list will be able to guide you

Lizette

Hi Eugene,

OMPE has a lot of monitoring features, but some of them can incur significant overhead.

You can contact me off-list and I can help engage the right people in OMPE development for a review of your  settings (PARMGEN).

Hi Lizette,
Thanks for your reply.
We are not so current with OMEGAMON, our version is V5R3 with RSU 1508. We noticed that when DB2 OMEGAMON is down, some critical CICS transection consumes 7% less CPU.

Is it possible to measure the OMEGAMON overhead without stopping it?

Eugene,

Most sites do not run Object Analysis all of the time due to high overheads, and so make it available to switch on only when needed for short periods. In addition, the Historical capture features of Omegamon for DB2 can be expensive especially for dynamic SQL. Turning off that feature did lead to significant overhead reduction. I don't have the specifics of the Db2 Customer savings at hand unfortunately, but was worth significant money.
