Question on sending DB2 Logs out
Listers -

What is the best way to send a LARGE number/size of DB2 to another place? From
z/OS to windows for example.

I am not sure what tools will be used, but I want to make sure the files are
usable. I would like to copy all of the archive logs to one file if possible.
Or I can do one at a time for transmission to the other platform (probably
windows)

So which of the following will work?

1. DFDSS Dump of all of the files and transmit
2. IEBGENER to copy all of the current logs to one tape files for transmit
3. Other?

This will be ftp'd to a server for analysis - about 2million cylinders of data.

All I was told 6 months' worth of logs (HLQ.ARCH1.D*.T*.A* only) which is about
1.5TB. Mostly migrated on z/OS

Any guidance appreciated.

Hi Lizette,

What is the business requirement behind this exercise?

I don't know any windows tool that can read a Db2 log, so I don't see much benefit of sending them off-platform. Also, if you want to reconstruct a row  you need the current data or an image copy to do roll-backwards or roll-forward (unless all tables have DATA CAPTURE CHANGES enabled).

If you are migrating an application from z/OS to windows I suggest leaving the archive logs on z/OS until they expire (usually within a few months).

Best regards,

Another consideration is data protection legislation - if the data comes from a production system.

If, somehow, you were able to read the log records (DCC?) you would have to mask the data before transferring from the mainframe.
