Interface Between Web Browser and OS/390 Using JDBC
Dear all,

I am one of the DB2 DBA member in a bank. We are using the DB2 V5 in
our OS/390 environment. I would like to study the way to access data
from DB2 tables in OS/390 thru Web Browser using Java program. However,
I have no idea about the appreciate softwares for the setup. Would you
please let me have some input about the interface, the following are
some of my queries for your referenece:

1. Should I use WebSphere in OS/390 UNIX environment?
2. Should I code a Java Servlet program?
3. Should I obtain the Java Classpath DB2 sqllib\java\db2java.zip?
Where can I download it if
it is required?
4. Any other softwares are required for the setup of WEB server other
than the application
server WebSphere?
5. Which books are appropriate for the study of this interface?

Please let me have your input and your assistance would be highly
appreciated.

Thanks and regards,
A Cheng

**** If you need to access to DB2 data thru the WEB you need a WEB server,
Websphere or Domino Go Webserver (plus security features), with all TCP/IP
features enabled etc etc.
So you need USS.

2. Should I code a Java Servlet program?

*** Not always. You can use NET.DATA macros to access to DB2 tables, too.
In this case there's no need for servlets.

3. Should I obtain the Java Classpath DB2 sqllib\java\db2java.zip?

**** To use JDBC/SQLJ there are other java classes.

4. Any other softwares are required for the setup of WEB server other
than the application server WebSphere?

*** I'm not sure until now, but I think that you need is S390 USS +
JDBC/SQLJ for DB2 + Java support for S390. So said IBM.

5. Which books are appropriate for the study of this interface?

-- Application Programming guide and ref for Java SC269547-01
-- JAVA PROGRAMMING GUIDE (i don't remember the code - take a look in
redbooks site)

Just to start

1. Should I use WebSphere in OS/390 UNIX environment?

WebSphere is one of a number of wab app servers you could use. We use it
because we are pretty much committed to IBM products. We use it on NT but
UNIX is more stable.

2. Should I code a Java Servlet program?

You could use servlets, JSP's, or EJB's. Depends on the needs of your app.

3. Should I obtain the Java Classpath DB2 sqllib\java\db2java.zip?
Where can I download it if
it is required?

Everthing necessary comes with Websphere Enterprise Edition, including HTTP
(web server), JDK, UDB, DB2 Connect and Network Dispatcher (rudimentary load
balancing software).

4. Any other softwares are required for the setup of WEB server other
than the application
server WebSphere?

See #3. Probably also want IDE tools like Visual Age for Java and Web
Studio.

5. Which books are appropriate for the study of this interface?

No real good books on Websphere. Logon to Amazon and do a search. Books
are available on Visual Age. Best source is IBM manuals and redbooks. Go
to the IBM website. IBM has some OK classes on this stuff too.

Please let me have your input and your assistance would be highly
appreciated.

There are some new redbooks on WEBSPHERE that are very
useful. See WWW.REDBOOKS.IBM.COM and search on
WEBSPHERE.
