With the IDUG EMEA Db2 Tech Conference right around the corner, we caught up with the Conference Planning Committee for some insight about everything the event has in store and what the planning process has been like. Whether you are a first-time attendee or a long-time IDUG member, the team shares some tips that will help you make the most of your conference experience.

As a user-driven organization, IDUG puts the emphasis on technical content, which means all the sessions on the agenda have been hand-picked by a group of professionals who are incredibly knowledgeable about the technology. “We have great technical content because we look at the presentations from a user point of view,” Sebastian Zok, presentation team lead, says. This ensures that each session offers some real-life applications. After the conference every attendee will have some new strategies, ideas, or approaches they can use in their everyday jobs. “It frequently amazes me how often the conference content saves me money later in projects at work,” Roland Schock, the 2020 conference chair, says. “It’s a great pool of knowledge to benefit from—especially because you can meet and chat with the experts directly.”

Though at first this event was planned as an in-person conference, the shift to virtual offers some unique opportunities. At the low cost of $199 with no travel budget required, this is a great chance for folks who don’t always get to attend because of cost or time constraints. We’re also hoping that our frequent attendees extend an invitation to their developers. “Too often we hear DBAs complain about the lack of knowledge of their developers,” Kurt Struyf, the board liaison, says. “Well, this year is the ideal chance to train them at a low cost and give them insight into the database.” While putting the grid together, the committee made sure to include plenty of material for developers. As Kurt says, “No more excuses; the time to train your developers is now!”

Not only does the virtual format allow new attendees to join easily, but it also gives you the chance to tailor your conference experience even more than usual. With both live and pre-recorded sessions, you can tune in to as many presentations as you like. You can also pause to take notes and experiment with ideas. The conference moves at your pace. Plus, all attendees will have access to the presentation recordings for a year, so this conference will be a knowledge base for you to return to whenever you need a refresher.

As you look ahead to the conference, it’s best to start making your plans before the event kicks off. That way you can hit the ground running and ensure that you don’t miss any of the sessions you want to attend. Be sure to download the IDUG app which will allow you to plan your own personal schedule. “Take the time to look at the agenda and try to decide before the conference starts which presentations you want to attend,” Jan Bol, the marketing team lead, advises. Be mindful of the start times especially if you aren’t in the Central European time zone.

The IDUG EMEA conference gives you the chance to interact directly with Db2 experts and developers, the people who work “behind the scenes” on the technology you use every day. Don’t let this opportunity pass you by. Register today for the IDUG EMEA Db2 Tech Conference. We look forward to seeing you in a few short weeks!
