Exciting Things to Come for IDUG

This year has been increasingly challenging to manage as we continue to deal with the effects of COVID-19 and the ramifications it has had on all of us personally and professionally. Many have been dealing with working from home for many months now, juggling work and family while keeping everyone safe. My family has had to learn to adapt and transition as we deal with many challenges, as I’m sure many of you are experiencing too. Thankfully, we are healthy and safe and grateful that we are together. We have learned many lessons and have had to adapt, transition, and balance our careers and personal lives very much like what we have been experiencing with IDUG.

We are grateful for the Conference Planning Committee and want to personally thank them. Thank you to Dustin Ratliff, our conference chair, and to the IDUG Headquarters staff for spending countless hours planning for an onsite, face-to-face North American Conference, only to have to pivot and redirect their efforts to pull together our virtual event in less than two months. Their hard work and dedication allowed us to achieve our goals and for the first time in a decade we managed to register and record over 1,100 attendees for our conference. Kudos to this team for making the North American Conference a huge success. I would also like to thank our speakers for the extra time and effort it took to record their presentations in advance, our volunteers, and vendor sponsors for their continued support of IDUG as we move forward into 2021.

We are not done yet. We were challenged by our international community to find a way to reschedule our Latin American and Australasian events and we are happy to announce that we will be offering two virtual events in the coming months for these IDUG communities. Please mark your planners for the following virtual events:

The Latin America Virtual Db2 Tech Seminars have been scheduled for the week of December 7, and presentations will be offered in Portuguese for Brazil and Spanish for Mexico. In addition, the website for Brazil will be providing information in Portuguese and English. We are working on updating the website for our Mexico conference and hope to have it completed in Spanish and English.

Both events will be structured like the IDUG North American Conference with pre-recorded presentations in English, Portuguese, and Spanish respectively, and live Q&A sessions.

The IDUG Australia Db2 Tech Conference which was previously planned for September 2020 has been successfully rescheduled as a virtual conference in March 2021. More information will be provided for this event but note that we will model it in a similar fashion to our previous IDUG virtual events. You will be able to participate virtually in our hands-on labs, keynote presentation, prerecorded speaker sessions, and live Q&A.

We are excited to announce that the we are working on refreshing our new community-centric website, and it will be available around the end of August or the beginning of September. Our new platform will help us build our communities and encourage more community-based engagement. These enhancements will continue to help us serve you and our commitment to our IDUG communities across the globe.

Your time and expertise are welcome and needed. If you are interested in participating, please reach out to us at  https://www.idug.org/participate/volunteer for more information on what opportunities are available.

I am excited for the year ahead, and I look forward to continuing the IDUG tradition of community and education. Please feel free to drop me a line with any questions or suggestions. I can be reached at Bob.Vargo@idug.org.

Looking forward to serving you as this year’s IDUG president.
