IDUG – 25 Years and Roger Miller

I was the conference chair for IDUG North America in Anaheim, CA in 2011. During the opening session I had the privilege of honoring Roger Miller and his contributions to DB2 and IDUG as it would be Roger’s last IDUG conference before his retirement.   We presented Roger with a crystal globe which was symbolic of Roger’s influence across the worldwide DB2 community.

If you attended an IDUG conference prior to Roger’s retirement then you probably have heard Roger speak, met Roger or have a story about Roger.   Roger was passionate, to say the least, in regards to DB2 for z/OS and in his support of IDUG.   I still have Roger’s business card on my desk with the title of ‘Evangelist’.  There was never a more appropriate business title for someone than that.

Personally for me it was always an honor to have Roger sitting in the room for one of my IDUG presentations.   He would usually hand me a note at the end with the latest PTFs, Redbooks or suggestions to include in my presentation.  It was always done with the intent of passing on the latest information for DB2 and to enhance my presentation.   If you have seen one of my presentations then you know I try to work in some of the John Deere equipment we make during the presentation.  That was one of Roger’s suggestions several years ago and he loved the effect it had on my presentations.  The manure spreader continues to make appearances in my presentations to this day.

Here is to IDUG’s 25 years, Roger Miller and all the other people like Roger who have a passion for DB2 and who support and participate in IDUG to make it the Worldwide DB2 User Community.
