  • 1.  triggering Active Log offload and temporary change from tape to DASD

we have tape issues and it impacted our active log offloads to archive (tape).
is there any problem with temporarily switching the UNIT zparm to DASD then back to TAPE?
Also to trigger an Archive is there a way to do that without truncating the active log?
In other words just have the  Full Active Logs offload and not truncate.
    thanks
    Bill

    Bill.

A full active log should offload as soon as the receiving device is available – automatically.  If that's not happening, that's probably a Sev-1 problem.

    Bill,
There should be no issue doing this.  It's been a while but we've done this in the past for both scheduled and unscheduled tape outages/issues especially years ago when we had physical tape.

One thing that you may want to keep in mind if you do this, is that you  may need to issue the -ARCHIVE LOG CANCEL OFFLOAD command if DB2 is trying to create an archive log when the tape issue occurs.  From what I can remember, we had situations where that archive log offload would get stuck waiting for a tape mount or other tape activity to complete.  Issuing the CANCEL OFFLOAD basically cancelled the offload having issues.  It would then almost immediately be re-issued with the archiver log going to DASD or wherever we directed it.

    Bill,
I actually did this jus a couple of weeks ago at our DR site, where we were having an issue with not being able to mount any virtual tapes for log offload.  I was able to assemble a new ZPARMs changing the UNIT to SYSALLDA instead of TAPE  (don't forget to set the appropriate sizes for PRIQTY and SECQTY as well).  Then a SET SYSPARM picked up the new ZPARMs dynamically.  I then had to reply NO to all the outstanding tape requests, and then issued the -ARCHIVE LOG CANCEL OFFLOAD to reset the offloading, and away it went, offloading to disk.

    Thanks,

    Kirk,

TYVM for your recap.  I can see this tidbit saving someone a lot of time in a DR or high-volume fail situation.

    Hi William

If you have to do it to avoid having all full active logs and quite a headache, go ahead and change temporarily to disk. Just one reminder or recommendation, don't send it to sysallda or another temporary sms storage group since you never know when you'll need info from those archive logs, and that would be a true Db2 nightmare.

    Cheers
