Session Number: 1341
Track: Big Data and Analytics
Session Type: Podium Presentation
Primary Presenter: Guy Lohman [Research Manager, Disruptive Information Management Architectures - IBM Almaden Research Center]
Room(s)/
Time(s):

Laveen => Tue, May 13, 2014 (02:00 PM - 03:00 PM)

Speaker Bio: Dr. Guy M. Lohman is Manager of Disruptive Information Management Architectures in the Advanced Information Management Department at IBM Research Division's Almaden Research Center in San Jose, CA, where he has worked for 31 years. He currently manages the Blink research project, which most recently contributed BLU Acceleration to DB2 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows 10.5. Dr. Lohman was the architect of the Query Optimizer of DB2 on the Linux, UNIX, and Windows platforms, and was responsible for its development from 1992 to 1997 (versions 2 – 5), as well as the invention and prototyping of Visual Explain and efficient sampling in DB2. Dr. Lohman was elected to the IBM Academy of Technology in 2002 and named an IBM Master Inventor in 2011. He is the author of over 70 technical papers in the refereed academic literature, and holds 30 U.S. patents.
Audience experience level: Intermediate
Presentation Category: Data Management, Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence, Emerging Technology, Implementing New DB2 Releases and Features
Presentation Platform: DB2 for Linux, UNIX, Windows
Audiences this presentation will apply to: Application Developers, Data Architects, Database Administrators
Technical areas this presentation will apply to: Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence, Database Performance (DB2 for LUW), New Release (DB2 for LUW)
Objective 1: Understand the business value of BLU Acceleration in DB2 LUW 10.5
Objective 2: Understand the technology behind BLU Acceleration, including compression and new techniques for performing predicate evaluation, joins, and grouping on compressed data.
Objective 3: Learn user tips for getting started with BLU Acceleration

Abstract:  You've heard all the hype about the new BLU Acceleration in DB2 LUW 10.5, with 10x - 50x faster performance, 2x - 3x better compression, and load-and-go simplicity. Now come peek behind the curtain and learn why this is reality, not hype. Topics covered will include BLU's patented "actionable compression" technology that performs most SQL query processing on the compressed values, as well as novel cache-conscious algorithms for joins and grouping that were designed from the ground up to exploit the characteristics of today's commodity multi-core processors and large main memories.
