Db2 for LUW

 Db2 for LUW

Keri Romanufa, IBM

Db2 v11.5 has been the continuous development release for the last 4 years. Currently at v11.5.7, there have been a number of mod packs for both traditional install and Db2U containerized installs.

This session will first review key enhancements in 11.5.7, and then take a look at what is still to come in the 11.5 stream. To finish off, we'll take a sneak peek into Db2 beyond 11.5

Optimal query access plans are essential for good data server performance and it is the query optimizer's job to choose the best one. However, occasionally no amount of statistics or tuning is enough to get the access plan you want. Or your application is effectively down, due to a poorly-performing query, and there isn't time to implement best practices. When these situations arise, Db2 optimization profiles and guidelines can be used to correct the access plan and get your application performing well again very quickly. Optimization profiles can specify various aspects of an access plan, control automatic query rewriting, or control the optimizer's plan search space. Guidelines can be specified with or without modifying your application. This presentation will show you what options are available and how to use them effectively.

Many years ago, I did a session on survival tips for DBAs. This presentation is all new tools that I have been using over the last two years to make my life easier in the Db2 for LUW world. Connectivity testing will be a big issue covered here.

Pavel Sustr, IBM Toronto Lab

As a member of the Db2 development and support team, Pavel uses Db2 problem determination techniques on a daily basis. Whether it is problems reported by test teams related to his newly-written code [rarely happens ;-)] or tough customer reports from the field, there are techniques that can lead to problem resolution more quickly. This session presents some less known--or, in some cases, undocumented--tricks and hidden gems that might help the user troubleshoot Db2 issues and even build their reputation as a serious Db2 hacker/insider.

The Db2 family of products--including Db2, Db2 Warehouse, and BigSQL--provide a number of important features for diagnosing and solving your SQL problems. Through a series of practical examples, this session will bring you up speed on the latest capabilities available for SQL diagnostics and show you how you can leverage them to solve query problems in your own environment. You will learn how to identify your most expensive SQL statements using the package cache table functions, and how to use Db2's "time spent" metrics to analyze where your problem queries are spending their time. You will also learn some new tips for monitoring sort memory metrics and query memory consumption in order to tune your analytic workloads. Finally, you will learn how to use the runtime explain capabilities in conjunction with the activity event monitor to capture actual query plan cardinalities as well as the per object metrics.
