Morning has broken! The Role of the DBA in the era of Machine Learning, Data Visualization, Real-time Analytics and Autonomous Databases. A DBA-Bear awakens after hibernation. Astonished he sees a lot of new creatures buzzing around: Machine Learning; Big Data; IOT; Cloud; Lean; SaFe and DevOps mushrooms everywhere. And what is happening with our old “Data Honey”? It is now called the “new oil," has a lot more value, and it is moving, changing, and going to the cloud! And as much as a bear prefers fresh salmon, data is captured, analyzed and visualized in real-time, not any longer analyzed only a few days later after an ETL process. The DBA-bear is not a scavenger! All this has an only meaning: Change and Adapt. Are we an endangered species, or is it just a new step in our evolution? What does it mean to work for a Data Driven Enterprise? Which are the shifts in our mindset necessary to embrace this change; who are the new fellow travelers? If you are only waiting for retirement, this is not a talk for you. If you want to find out more about the future of your role, then you are exactly in the right place.

There are many reasons affecting the version of Db2 your organization uses, such as time to migrate, what features/functions drive your implementation--even cost. One thing does tend to remain true: many enterprises are making scant use of some of the basic Db2 capabilities introduced both in previous versions and in newer releases. With migration and function levels providing easier adoption, why not put what you do have to work for you and your organization? We will look at some of the key features in Db2 that will help provide you a faster, easier and safer way to get from a feature being under consideration to an actual implementation in your production environment.

The information about getpages has been available for free since Db2 V12 in RTS and I will explain how to take advantage of this precious information. After this presentation, you can implement a simple monitoring tool in one hour and directly get the advantages of this new source of data. We will help you identify objects with a high getpage activity or objects candidates for page steal none buffers. This will help you have a better view on objects' behavior and with what is the most used index for a table.

In an OLTP environment where every microsecond matters, the ability to access real-time data for instantaneous analysis is critically important. Additionally, after such diagnosis, quick remediation is necessary. What do you do if the problem is not the access path? How do you resolve performance problems if: they affect latch waits; the number of waits for log writes is abnormally large; the response times vary dramatically dependent on the variable values; or the number of long prepares is constantly growing? In this presentation, we will identify problem areas, analyze dynamic queries, and resolve the problems. Therefore, I've selected 10 use cases derived from everyday practical work and only two of them are related to access path issues.

Large tables in Db2 are frequently inflated by inactive data. Maryela shares a solution proposal using Db2 for z/OS archive table capabilities where inactive data can be separated but stays available to the applications that need access to that old data.

Most people have a fuzzy understanding of the SMF data that contains all the information about what Db2 is doing behind the scenes. There are SMF record types, IFCIDs, trace classes, and somehow they all relate to each other. But how?
