Db2 for LUW

 Db2 for LUW

Scott Konash, Datavail

High availability is a top priority for many organizations, but they may not want to use proprietary solutions to implement it. This session covers how to use Pacemaker with Db2 LUW for HADR implementation.

As technology evolves, and the way and pace at which businesses adopt and exploit technology accelerates, the DBA focus areas continue to grow. In this session, we deep dive into the evolving role of DBAs and what they need to maintain peak effectiveness.
Db2 for z/OS

 Db2 for z/OS

Brian Laube, Manulife Financial
IBM Champion

Db2 Z network encryption has been available for a while now. But it becomes a minor trick to identify all those end-users (individuals and application servers) who are still using the open port and who is using the secure port.  This presentation will briefly overview how Db2 network encryption is enabled on the database side. Then it will review how clients can be configured to use the secure port. And importantly, the presentation will review HOW to find which clients are using the open port and who is using the secure port. The presentation will review IFCID 365 and how most popular performance monitors provide functionality to effectively review IFCID 365. Plus there is a review of some enterprise network tools provide logging to identify the tricky VPN users with changing IP every time they connect to the network.

Derek Tempongko, IBM & James Pickel, IBM

This session covers how Db2 AI for z/OS (Db2ZAI) learns and recommends system profiles used to protect your system from an unplanned spike of connections. Db2's connection and thread strategies will also be discussed, including system profiles, thread pooling, and recent enhancements in Continuous Delivery.

Anthony Ciabattoni, IBM

This session will go through the journey of graduation from college all the way through to being a member of Db2 for z/OS development and a member of the SWAT team. The journey will go through the good, bad, and ugly of what has been successful and unsuccessful.

Calisto Zuzarte, IBM Canada Lab

Query performance is highly dependent on a good database optimizer. Optimization today relies on coarse statistics and a general cost model to provide estimates to help with costing and coming up with an optimal plan. Db2 is pioneering the use of machine learning within the optimizer and has shipped a Tech Preview. This session looks at the benefits of Machine Learning in the optimizer, details how you can try it as part of the "Tech Preview" in Db2, and looks ahead to the capabilities that are actively being added to allow it to be used in production.

Adaptive compression, which was extended to all Db2 product editions in V11.5, offers dramatic possibilities for storage savings, but the payoff can be limited for objects still residing in older tablespaces. What's more, the logging and bandwidth requirements of HADR present additional obstacles for DBAs to contend with when planning database maintenance. This session reveals common issues that impact compression efficiency in Db2 V11.5 and explores the trade-offs of different techniques used on real-world HADR databases that were originally created as far back as V8.2.

Michael Kalous, Broadcom

Practicing and testing database object recovery is essential for ensuring safety of the data. The redirected recovery introduced with Db2 12 is one of the means that enable DBAs to perform a safe, controlled and convenient 'practice run' of the recovery process. We will discuss how the process works behind the scenes, how DBAs can prepare for it, and what essential information can be gathered by using redirected recovery to practice and test the recovery process regularly.

This presentation will discuss the benefits of data virtualization vs replication. It will highlight how IBM’s Cloud Pak for Data and Data Virtualization Manager for z/OS can be used to easily integrate non-relational z/OS data with other disparate data sources into a common view without the cost; complexity; and risk of data replication or having to have a deep knowledge of z/OS.
