I hope you, your families, and your friends are staying safe during this time. As I sat down to write this newsletter, I realized that this will be my penultimate newsletter as IDUG’s president. In a short few weeks, during the virtual conference, I will be handing the reins over to the incoming president. While the handover was planned to be in person with a celebration in front of our volunteers and conference attendees, we will instead be doing a virtual passing of the baton.
The end of May typically marks the start of the busy summer travel; however, 2020 is unlike any other year, and it has been a tumultuous year to say the least. The events of over the past few months have definitely caused me to reflect on IDUG’s identity. IDUG has always been a global melting pot, and we strongly believe and practice inclusion and embrace diversity at all levels. IDUG’s DNA is strong because of its diversity in thinking and as well as our community’s diverse cultural heritage.
As most of you may have already seen, the premier IDUG North American Technical Conference kickoff will be held virtually on July 20, 21, and 23, followed by three additional weeks of conference content. This is a unique opportunity to obtain education at the highest quality for a very nominal fee. IDUG, as a one-time offer, is also providing its conference attendees a complimentary one-year premium IDUG membership. Amidst the pandemic, our volunteers have been working tirelessly to choose a virtual conference platform, and we were able to get that done in a record time. The IDUG regional events in Australia and Latin America will be held online/virtually. We will be announcing dates and opening up registration soon.
As of now, the plans are still in full swing for an in-person IDUG EMEA Conference in Edinburgh.
As with my last newsletter, I want to provide an update on the progress IDUG has made in the three focus areas: digital presence, community growth, and providing best-in-class technical education.
We are continuing to make progress on our website re-platforming. We are currently going through wire frame design and working on the mechanics of migrating content. We plan to launch the updated website in either the late June or early August timeframe. We will not be doing any changes during the weeks leading up to the conference to avoid impacting IDUG conference attendees.
IDUG is currently in the process of evaluating the best way to host a virtual meeting for the RUG leaders to share and exchange ideas. We strongly believe that sharing ideas amongst the various RUGs will result in a much stronger and vibrant RUG ecosystem.
We are continuing to make progress on offering Db2 proctored badges remotely. Please be on the lookout for new announcement soon. IDUG is also exploring the possibility of partnering with Db2 SMEs to offer high quality online/virtual education. More to come on this!
While these are unprecedented times, rest assured that the passion, perseverance, and perspicacity of the IDUG volunteers will position our organization well for the long haul.
