Developing RESTful apps for Db2 on Cloud

George Baklarz

Digital Technical Engagement Team

When: Thursday, Nov 8, 2018 14:00 to 17:00
Where: TBA
Price: FREE

LIMITED PLACES AVAILABLE PLEASE REGISTER ASAP ALLOCATED ON FIRST COME BASIS

Abstract:

In addition to the traditional access methods available for use with Db2 on Cloud (JDBC, CLI, ODBC), Db2 on Cloud also allows the use of RESTful calls to access data from the database. The advantage of using RESTful calls is that the client does not require any Db2 libraries or drivers – only the RESTful API library is required.

Objectives:

This workshop will take you through the steps of registering for a Db2 on Cloud service, setting up connection credentials, and then using a pre-configured system to access Db2 on Cloud using RESTful calls – without having to use any Db2 libraries. Some knowledge of Jupyter notebooks, Python programming, and of course, Db2, would be an asset, but not necessary.

Additional Requirements:

Students should have their laptop but if not, they will get instructions on what to do afterwards.

Speaker Bio:

George Baklarz, B. Math, M. Sc, Ph.D. Eng., has spent many years in IBM working on various aspects of database technology. In 1991, George was part of the team that introduced the Db2 distributed product to the market. Since this time he has worked on vendor enablement, competitive analysis, product marketing, product planning, and technical sales support for the Db2 product. George currently works in the Worldwide Digital Technical Engagement Team.

Abstract:

More and more customers are building virtual data lakes which consist of multiple data sources. It is quite common to have a mix of Hadoop, Db2, Oracle, Neteeza, etc. This hands-on lab will teach students how to use IBM's Db2 Big SQL to easily build analytical SQL queries against Hadoop using Big SQL as well as Spark. It will also highlight Big SQL’s federated capabilities by building queries that join unstructured Hadoop data with relational Db2 data. This lab is great for Db2 professionals looking to learn how to leverage their Db2 SQL skills to explore Hadoop.
