The public is growing increasingly afraid of the possibilities of identity theft. Databases that support web-based user activity often store sensitive data like names, addresses and credit card numbers. Responding to public fear, we are often asked to ensure that the data we store in DB2 is secure. Sometimes encrypting the data is the answer and sometimes it isn't. We'll take a look at the risks of storing sensitive data in DB2 and who might be able to exploit which technologies to get at that data. The encryption and row-level security features in DB2 Version 8 will be discussed along with alternative solutions.
