DATE: 2008-5-20 (09:15 AM - 10:15 AM)
SPEAKERS: Rod Deane (L.L. Bean, Inc.)
In the spring of 2006 L.L. Bean made the decision to migrate their Enterprise Data Warehouse environment from AIX to Linux. This presentation goes from the decision to migrate to Linux through the migration process. It discusses the obstacles met along the way, successes and whether the original business objectives were met.
EXP. LEVEL: Beginner
Why Linux? What was the business justification to migrate the Entriprise Data Warehouse to Linux after running successfully for twelve years on AIX?
The proof is in the POC. The Proof of Concept was a two step process. First, how many modifications did we need to make on the 1100+ jobs and 130 scripts that manage the infrastructure. Second, can we meet our SLA running UDB on Linux.
To BCU or not to BCU. The next big decision was do we go with IBM's Balanced Configuration Unit or use a multi vendor solution.
The migration process. Now that we have a new Data Warehouse environment running on Linux how do we migrate 4000+ tables, 5.5 terabytes of data and 500 users to the Linux environment with the least amount of disruption.
The results. Did we meet our objectives? Are we meeting our SLA? How is UDB performing? What does the user community think?
