IBM's utilities get better and better with every version. In particular, today's utilities support the coexistence of maintenance in parallel to online. But how can a DBA most efficiently use the functions of the current utility generation? At LVM,maintenance procedures have been implemented that get the best out of all available utility functions in order to insure efficient and secure operations of our applications.I will present our methodology to design a maintenance procedure based on Real Time Statistics that efficiently fulfils all maintenance requirements, while saving resources.I will show years of experiences in using real time statistics. With our real-time maintenance procedures,we are not only in the position to guarantee shorter recovery times and more efficient access paths, but also to save money by running maintenance on demand.A real time maintenance process saves system resources and economically realizes the many advantages of using the z/OS platform.
