DB2 contains different memory areas known as pools - RID Pool, EDM Pool, Sort Pool and Buffer Pools. DB2 uses these storage areas for different tasks during SQL processing. This presentation will help clear up the water about the memory pools by explaining what these pools are and how DB2 uses them. It will give you an understanding of how DB2 uses its internal memory. With this knowledge, you will be able to make your system as well as individual SQL perform better.

The participants will understand how DB2 uses the EDM, RID, Sort and Bufferpools for internal processing of application SQL. Other pools and caches used by DB2, and how they are used will be described along with the commands to use them.
Bufferpool tuning is, in large part, made up of assigning objects to different pools. We will cover bufferpool tuning. This consists of identifying the objects that belong together together with the bufferpool parameters that can be set
A couple of the pool types (EDM and Buffer) have thresholds. We will discuss what these thresholds are, and what kind of performance implication this might have. It is key to identify the performance degrading threshold events.
IBM’s memusage tool formats IFCID 225 output. This describes the memory usage of your DB2 system. This presentation explains how to use it, and how to interpret the results.
Page fixing is new in v8. We will explain what it is. Page fix is not appropriate for every bufferpool. A methodology to find the appropriate usage of pagefix will be shown. Real-life examples of page fix and its effects will be presented.
