Optimal query access plans are essential for good query performance and it is the DB2 for Linux, UNIX and Windows query optimizer's job to choose the best access plan. The DB2 query optimizer is very sophisticated and considers many factors while costing an access plan such as catalog statistics, the schema, the compilation environment and the system configuration. However, occasionally the optimizer is unable to choose a good access plan and you need to fix it quickly. This presentation will cover some key tips and techniques to help the query optimizer choose the right access plan in a variety of situations. Some techniques are more holistic and will apply to many queries while others are intended to be tactical to fix a specific query quickly.
