Topic: 2015 EMEA
Subtopic: DB2 for LUW
A recent introduction to DB2 (with 10.5 FixPack 4; the “Cancun” release) was the Shadow Tables feature. This allows a columnar copy of a row-based table to be stored in the same database and allows the optimizer to choose the most efficient data source.
But the data needs to be kept in line and the mechanism used to accomplish this is Change Data Capture, or CDC. Some users find the overhead of CDC, in terms of set-up, maintenance and performance to negate the value of Shadow tables.
This presentation is intended to show the way to implement Shadow tables without using CDC and to highlight the benefits and the deficits of doing so.
