The DB2 Utilities Suite is designed to work with the DFSORT program. As a DB2 DBA on z/OS it is important to understand how most DB2 utilities use DFSORT to sort either the table space or index data and how to react in case of problems. In this presentation we will focus on recent enhancements concerning DB2 and DFSORT. We will try to give recommendations to get the best sorting performance and how to avoid sort failures. We will explain how sort workload can be directed to a zIIP processor when available. We will show how to debug DFSORT problems and share some practical experiences with the new SORTNUM elimination feature.
EXP. LEVEL: Intermediate
Understand RDS SORT versus DFSORT. Know the different types of sort work data sets used by DB2 and how they are allocated.
Implement the new SORTNUM elimination feature to let DB2 determine the optimal number of sort data sets based on Real Time Statistics.
Understand the best DFSORT default options to get maximum parallelism and performance.
Understand how DFSORT uses virtual storage under the 2GB line and above the 2Gb line in 64-bit storage.
Understand how to debug DFSORT problems.
