The ability to tune SQL continues to be the most important factor in DB2 application performance. Interpreting and influencing the SQL Access Path is the key to improving SQL performance. Since the earliest versions of DB2, the standard Explain facility and PLAN_TABLE have been the primary tools for understanding Access Paths. DB2 V8 introduced a FREE, gui based tool that provides new insight into the complex and lengthy Access Paths that we see in today's applications. The Optimization Service Center (OSC)tool will be used in this presentation to review SQL and focus on critical points in the Access Path that affect performance. The focus of the presentation is on the techniques for tuning SQL. The OSC makes the task of tuning much simpler, but itís not required to apply the techniques. The same strategies could be applied using the standard PLAN_TABLE. Installing and setting up the OSC is not covered. Installing and setting up the OSC is not covered.
