In this first part of a two-part presentation technical aspects of locking in DB2 for z/OS are presented. Various options and their impact are described, followed by a discussion about Lock Avoidance and Lock Escalation. Locking in utilities are handled differently than in SQL, so claims and drain will be presented. An overview of various ways of collecting information about locking problems will be given. Finally new locking options in DB2 9 for z/OS (Skip locked data and Optimistic locking) are introduced.Detailed information about handling of Timeouts and Deadlocks will be given in "Lock Out Your Locking Problems - Part 2 of 2"
