Spark Thread (G) on Tuesday

Sign up for this special SPARK track at IDUG EMEA 2015 and find out what is SPARK and how it can help you and your company stay at the forefront of technology. This is an unique opportunity to hear from industry leaders.

What is Spark and how can it help your career ?

Apache® Spark™ is an open-source cluster computing framework with in-memory processing to speed analytic applications up to 100 times faster compared to technologies on the market today. Developed in the AMPLab at UC Berkeley, Apache Spark can help reduce data interaction complexity, increase processing speed and enhance mission-critical applications with deep intelligence.

Highly versatile in many environments, Apache Spark is known for its ease of use in creating algorithms that harness insight from complex data. Spark was elevated to a top-level Apache Project in 2014 and continues to expand today.

IBM is committing to the Apache Spark project with investments in design-led innovation and broad-scale education programs to promote open source innovation and accelerate intelligence into every application.

IBM and Apache Spark: The start of something big in data and design

It’s not just about data access anymore. It’s about building algorithms that put analytics into action. It's about changing data science and driving intelligent apps fueled by data. Combining data, design and speed, IBM and Apache Spark are creating a new blueprint of innovation.

IBM and Spark. Power of data. Simplicity of design. Speed of innovation.

G06 - Apache Spark: What's in It for Your Business?

When: Tuesday Nov 17th, 2015 - 10:15 - 11:15
Where: Meeting Room 2

This session will provide a comprehensive overview of Apache Spark, a general-purpose Big Data processing engine built around speed, ease of use and sophisticated analytics. Experts will enumerate the benefits of incorporating Spark in the Enterprise, including how it allows developers to write fully-featured distributed applications ranging from traditional data processing pipelines to complex machine learning. They will also review the Spark stack, give a high-level review of core Spark APIs and show comparisons between Spark and Apache Hadoop MapReduce.

Presenter: Chris Fregly  [IBM]

G07 - Apache Spark: What’s Under the Hood?

When: Tuesday Nov 17th, 2015 - 14:00 - 15:00
Where: Meeting Room 2

Apache Spark is a general-purpose big data processing engine built for speed, ease of use and sophisticated analytics. At its core, Spark features a unified framework that serves different data processing needs such as interactive analysis, batch jobs, streaming data and iterative algorithms. This session covers Spark's architectural components through the life of simple Spark jobs. Those already familiar with the basic Spark API will gain deeper knowledge of how Spark works with the potential of becoming an advanced Spark user, administrator or contributor.

Presenter: Chris Fregly  [IBM]

G08 - Using Apache Spark With DB2 for z/OS and z Systems Data

When: Tuesday Nov 17th, 2015 - 15:15 - 16:15
Where: Meeting Room 2

Apache Spark is becoming increasingly important in the context of z Analytics. To expose z data from different subsystems, such as DB2 for z/OS, IMS, VSAM, etc., into a Spark environment, represents an opportunity to apply Spark analytics to z data sources, and to integrate analytical insight derived via Spark from other heterogeneous data sources. This presentation will describe the technical integration of the key Spark components (Spark Core, Spark MLlib) into a z Analytics environment with DB2 for z/OS and other subsystems. Also learn about possible use case scenarios that are derived from client engagements.

Presenter: Eberhard Heckler [IBM]

G09 - Apache Spark and DB2 BLU: Making ‘People Flow’ in Cities Measurable and Analyzable

When: Tuesday Nov 17th, 2015 - 16:30 - 17:30
Where: Meeting Room 2
Millions of people move to large cities every day.  What if we make the people flow measurable and analyzable? This would be of great value for city traffic planning, real time monitoring of hot areas and for targeted advertising. This capability exists by leveraging and combining Apache Spark streaming, Spark SQL, Spark batch processing, plus DB2 BLU analytics technology. Spark provides powerful stream and batch processing on big data, and DB2 BLU enhances the ability of complex analytics on multiple dimensions. BLU and Spark are integrated seamlessly into one solution. This session will also show a demo that is based on a large city in China.
Presenter: Peter Kohlman [IBM]
