Oh no! Roger, you will definitely be missed. I have enjoyed many of your presentations, your contributions to DB2-L, and I'm also grateful for everything you have contributed that I don't know about but have benefitted from. Enjoy your retirement, but don't be too much of a stranger. And, THANK YOU!

Warm regards,

Re: [ADMIN] About Roger Miller
(in response to Cathy Taddei)
Hi all

I suspected it. It's so strange, I started with DB2 V3 and Roger Miller
was already a well-know expert. A great and long career as I was able to
find an article about System R and one of the author was Roger ! Anyway I
think he'll continue to have a look to DB2 but in the same time I'm sure
he'll enjoy his retirement.

Roger Miller's facts:

- DB2 works because Roger tells it to work.
- Roger Miller can address 69 bit
- Roger Miller can ICopy himself.
- Roger Miller can finish an infinite loop in 0.01 seconds.
- Roger Miller can normalize a schema inserting random data
- Roger Miller can parse invalid XML in a XML table
- Roger Miller don't use GOTO in DB2 code. Code comes directly to him.
- There are no RANDOM values for Roger Miller.
- Roger Miller never rollbacked data
- Roger Miller can decrypt any NSA encryption code. Using a bean-counter
calculator
- Roger Miller doesn't need a test suite. A test suite needs Roger Miller.

- Butterfly effect: when Roger will retire all DB2 in the world will stop
for few seconds to celebrate his retirement .
- Roger Miller doesn't need compilers nor editors. He roundhouse kicks
the disk and the bytecode appears.
- Roger Miller will announce DB2 V 69, the first version running on Zen/OS
system, running Vulcanian code and capable of a mental contact with
system programmers. Directly from Enterprise deck.
- System R. R is for Roger, not for relational.

Thank you Roger for your contribution to DB2 community and be a good boy
!!!

Re: [ADMIN] About Roger Miller

He will indeed be missed.

A quick search on google reveals that: "Roger Miller is best known for his humorous novelty songs, which overshadow his considerable songwriting talents as well as his hardcore honky tonk roots".

It's the first time that I've seen System R referred to as "hardcore honky tonk".

Cheers, Adam

Roger has been the Face of DB2 since . . . forever.  I'm having a hard time imagining
who could step into that role. Please enjoy your retirement.  It will give us hope.

Re: [ADMIN] About Roger Miller
(in response to Cathy Taddei)

...I just tripped over another one of Roger's famous songs - in a back issue of the IDUG Solutions Journal (Summer 1998).

Here's "The Damaged Database Blues":
I've lost all my data,
Can't find it at all.
I really should have copied more.
Now the ax will fall.
I got the blues,
The database is damaged blues.
When we can't recover,
All we got is bad news
And a case of the blues.

And of course, his goal was always to "keep a few more people from singing the database blues"...

Thank you so much, Roger, for all your songs - and of course also for your countless non-musical but equally enlightening expressions during all this time!

All the best for your start into the time that lies before you - I'm certain we will hear your voice from time to time again anyway. Which is just great!

Best regards,
Peter

Re: [ADMIN] About Roger Miller

Thank you all for the humor, and many fond memories. I think that Adam may have me confused with the other Roger Miller, song writer with tunes like "King of the Road", "Don't Roller Skate in a Buffalo Herd" and "Dang Me". I've never been a solo artist, but one who works best ensemble, and the team is still hard at work on service, test, and development for versions 8, 9, 10, and beyond. Many great inventors and implementers have worked on DB2 and then moved to other pursuits. I mentioned many of them in the DB2Night how on DB2 history, but I left out too many. We have hundreds more at work today around the world. I can assure you that DB2 is in capable hands. Leaving would be much more difficult if I did not expect great work from my colleagues, our partners, consultants, and customers. The future of DB2 looks so bright that we'll all need dark glasses.

I've started working on the next song. Here's what I have so far, but I can probably improve it.

Some glad morning, when this job is done,
I'll fly away.
To hike and bike, we will have some fun.
I'll fly away.

Well spoken Roger !!!!
We have all enjoyed your enthusiasm - you willingness to share and teach - sometimes lecturing <lol>.
Somehow I have a hard time believing you will NOT participate now and then - especially considering you were still taking notes during the past IDUG (your blood is too thickened of DB2).
I completely agree - we have some great resources taking over - but it probably takes more than one (sorry IBM youngsters). I myself have really enjoyed the chats with your co-workers like Terry (Mr. Optimizer), Brian Smith (Mr. utilities), Rudy (Miss FLASHCOPY/B&R) etc. (names left out – please excuse me).

We will all miss you Roger.
I especially want to thank you for your total lack of discrimination and judgement.
<Gulp> - yes really, no matter how dumb the question was or who asked for help, you gave it willingly to all and sunder.
Hope you enjoy the down time with your wife and family.
Thanks,
Mark.

Some glad morning, when this job is done, I'll fly away.
To hike and bike, we will have some fun.
I'll fly away.

Roger Miller, DB2 for z/OS
