[AD] More zIIP support for REORG and LOAD utilities

[AD] More zIIP support for REORG and LOAD utilities
In our continuing efforts to reduce CPU usage for Db2z utilities, a portion of the RELOAD phase of the LOAD and REORG utilities can now be offloaded to a zIIP processor, which can simultaneously improve performance and reduce costs.

Paul,

You need to put [AD] in front of such posts in the future.

One also cannot make use of this in v11 until the APAR (PI73882 / UI44914) for it is sorted out - it's in a PE state.

There's no v11 fix for PI84430 yet.

This comment concerned me as we are about to apply UI44914 with some other maintenance, however the apply check didn’t flag it as PE.

Looking in IBM link, I saw that PI84430 is actually flagged as closed. I eventually determined that the issues related to this APAR were fixed in PI86574 (PTF UI50749 for V11). PI86574 is marked “AE PI84430 FIX COMPLETION” and the description lists the same issues that were listed in PI84430 plus one other.

So it looks like this is now good to go with V11.

That's a bit confusing! PI73882 / UI44914 held up quite a few PTFs we wanted in our last round of maintenance.

So, PI73882 is marked as PE and refers to 3 fixing APARs. One of these (PI84430) has a v12 PTF but not one for v11 but, as you said, is Closed.

PI86574 does have a v11 PTF and is the fix for PI84430 as well, even though there's no mention of it in PI84430.

I ought to read things more thoroughly! I've just run an APPLY CHECK for UI44914 and it looks OK now, saying that the PTF for PI8657 supercedes PI84430.

This must be a new definition of the word „bit“ that I was previously unaware of...

Hi Paul,

This is applicable for all environment. We are upgraded our DB2 system to V11 3 months back.

Could you please let us what are the things need to check if applicable for all environment.

Thanks in Advance!!!

RE: More zIIP support for REORG and LOAD utilities

Just FYI: Although the ptf states that the change is effective immediately in utility job submission, I checked with IBM support and was told that you really won't get the additional zip offload benefit until the db2 subsystem is recycled after applying the ptf.

Thanks for update!!

My question is that if we apply the mentioned ptf in our environment we will get benefits or not.

Hi Jitinder,

I'm afraid that I don't quite understand your question. The blog post says:

All Db2 11 and Db2 12 environments that have at least one zIIP configured with spare capacity will automatically experience this general purpose processor CPU time reduction after the related maintenance is applied.

If you are on Db2 11, that would seem to answer your question as worded.

Hi Paul,

These APAR's are new one and came in 2018 or these are existing one and are there in last year also.

As we had done DB2 v11 upgrade in Oct, 2017 and requested for PTF from IBM in Mar, 2017. Also if these are existing one its already there in the PTF we requested from IBM last year and no need to apply us in our environment.

Thanks in Advance!!!

RE: [AD] More zIIP support for REORG and LOAD utilities

Hi Jitinder,

If your maintenance level is from March 2017, the two Db2 11 PTFs are both new enough that it seems you might need to apply them in your environment:

  • PI73882 was available on 29 September 2017.
  • PI80243 was available in July 2017.

A system programmer can run an SMPE report to find out for sure.
