[OT] Vendor products
My 1st exposure to a vendor product was back in ’88 (yes, really; I had to check my own LinkedIn profile to be sure!) and !Candle’s wonderful !DB/Workbench for DB2. Loved that product. I can think of one current Catalog admin tool that doesn’t seem to be any better than that was all those years ago – and in some ways it’s worse. :o(

When at a certain Vendor I did encourage the Marketing Manager to resurrect a T-shirt that was originally out before my time. The words were: The Best Little Software House in Texas. Classic.

Cheers,

Raymond

Insight was the first DB2 monitor I used in the mid 80’s.
I think it was before DB2PM was available.

I think Goal was bought by Legent, then Legent bought by CA in ‘95

So many software companies have disappeared since the boom days of DB2 software products…

Remember the Platinum and BMC party face-offs at IDUG -- the two story BMC booth…
When Platinum had The Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders at their party…
When there used to be (probably) more than 30+ vendors at a conference.

About a yr ago, I started making a list of all the DB2 vendors that don’t exist anymore… I was over 30…
Wonder where I saved that list…

CA-Insight renamed as CA SYSVIEW Performance Management Option for Db2 for z/OS was acquired from Platinum Technology which was acquired by several more companies. I worked with Insight back in the late 80's when I believe Goal Systems which I believe was then acquired by Legent and then Platinum then CA.

Ha – sounds familiar. It used to run off an overnight extract of the Catalog, back in the days when querying the Catalog directly was asking for Catalog contention. Upside was you could make some DDL changes then, if you changed your mind, your ‘HDDL’ (or whatever it was) command to build the DDL would be as it was before your change, as it was working off the extract. Handy for the, er, occasional DDL mess-up from a(n at the time) novice DBA. :o)

And yes, I think it – or a related !Candle product – helped me recover an accidentally-dropped tablespace from Production all those years ago. Oops. And in one clear example you get the benefits and potential costs of your DBAs having Sysadm as a matter of course.

Those were the days. Trust your folks to Do The Needful and give them the powers to do so.
