I understand Infinite Logging is not supported in HADR. The Question is Why?
Hi,
I understand Infinite Logging is not supported in HADR. The Question is Why?
I thought about it for long and came up with a explanation to pat myself in the back for my reasoning skills [not DB2 knowledge :( ] but it did not last long after I got confronted by a very logical question for which I do not know any answer.
My Reason for Not Supporting Infinite Logging in HADR: This logging method does not restrict your transactional log file size or span. So it is very usual to retrieve lot of log files form archive to roll back a transaction. This is over head both on primary and need to ship so many log files over network to stand by for rolling back. Stand by cannot archive log files or look up for log files in archive location in run time. Roll back of an active transaction and Roll back on a roll forward pending database are not the same thing and may not work the same way.
I am very Happy!!! I Know Db2!!! I patted myself!!! But it did not last long. The following question totally drubbed me.

Question: Why not allow Infinite Logging under a specific configuration of HADR? For Example, Configure OVERFLOW LOG PATH of Standby to Archive Log Location of Primary. This type of configuration will make sure all the log files that are getting retrieved in the primary for a roll back be available directly to stand by from the OFL path. So primary need not ship anything to standby for rolling back that transaction. The Log file retrieval and sending becomes a non-issue in such a configuration. Obviously it is a single scenario in which you can allow infinite logging in HADR, if the problem is with the log files and rolling back of transaction is a issue.
I got no answer for that question. or there is some thing else as a reason for HADR not supporting Infinite Logging.
Unfortunately, the following link that contains the answer is not working temporarily. I will retry after some time.

I kindly request your valuable Inputs.
