Db2 12 and Db2 Connect

Db2 12 and Db2 Connect
I apologize if this has been discussed before.

Does anyone know of a concise, understandable write-up on configuring Db2 Connect for connections to Db2 12 at APPLCOMPAT levels higher than V12R1M500? Specifically when using gateway servers?

I know you need to be at very current levels of the client / gateway / JDBC driver. I have Data Studio working going directly to Db2 without a gateway, but no luck with non-JDBC connections or even JDBC connections via a gateway. The documentation I have found so far is... well it's written by IBM.

Any help would be appreciated.

It has not been discussed here before. At IDUG EMEA last year during a panel
discussion somebody said that you cannot pass clientApplcompat through a Db2
Connect gateway. You should open a service request.

RE: Db2 12 and Db2 Connect

Hi,

You mentioned you had already read the IBM documentation, but I wonder if this Developerworks post would help you?

https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/community/blogs/c80a2d5b-edfd-41ce-9feb-0c1bcb5b297c/entry/Configure_new_function_level_using_Db2Connect_for_migration_to_Db2_for_z_OS_12_Function_level_501?lang=en

My DB2 Connect experience is with clients connecting directly to DB2 and not going through a gateway.  The above link had recommendations for parameter settings (as well as binding the driver packages); I would think those would work on a gateway.

RE: Db2 12 and Db2 Connect

Sorry....just noticed the fine print at the end of the article in the link, and it says this does not work for a Gateway.  Also, I hadn't seen Dan L's response before I sent mine.

Hi David,

Also note that IBM have recommended direct connections over gateways for many years.
There are very few technical reasons for using a gateway -- it just adds cost (hw, sw, maintenance, operations) and latency.

There is an RFE open for adding gateway support for APPLCOMPAT: https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/rfe/execute?use_case=viewRfe&CR_ID=126019

Db2 12 and Db2 Connect
(in response to David Simpson)
That’s one issue I guess, but I suspect most people get an enterprise license.

The other issue is when people concentrate connections through a gateway to limit IP addresses that connect to Db2. For example one of my customers has a firewall in place that extremely limits the IP addresses that can connect to Db2. There are hundreds of clients, but those clients can’t get to Db2. They have to go through the gateway. Now, we asked that the gateway be eliminated, but they do not want to open up the firewall to hundreds of IP addresses. What’s the future hold for us then? Well, we will be stuck in perpetual V12R1M500. That’s it. The customer is fine with it as their primary goal is to eliminate Db2. This actually helps their cause.

RE: Db2 12 and Db2 Connect

Hi David,

If you have Db2 Connect Unlimited you can install the license on the server side. If you don't have the unlimited version it probably means you have very few Db2 connect clients, thus installing the license on the client side is not a big issue.

RE: Db2 12 and Db2 Connect
(in response to Daniel Luksetich)

Hi Dan,

I suggest you add that concern to the Aha Idea I posted earlier in this thread.

Note that you might not be stuck on FL500 forever; you might just not be able to control on an application/connection level which APPLCOMPAT you get.

BTW, out of curiosity what other databases have gateway or proxy support?

In Reply to Daniel Luksetich:

Is there not still the licensing issue? The normal Db2 client will not connect directly to z/OS data sources.

Sorry, RFE have been replaced by Aha ideas. Here's the correct link for the request for enhancement: https://ibmanalytics.ideas.aha.io/ideas/DB2CON-I-1

In Reply to Jørn Thyssen:

Hi David,

Also note that IBM have recommended direct connections over gateways for many years.
There are very few technical reasons for using a gateway -- it just adds cost (hw, sw, maintenance, operations) and latency.

There is an RFE open for adding gateway support for APPLCOMPAT: https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/rfe/execute?use_case=viewRfe https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/rfe/execute?use_case=viewRfe&CR_ID=126019 &CR_ID=126019

In Reply to David Simpson:

I apologize if this has been discussed before.

Does anyone know of a concise, understandable write-up on configuring Db2 Connect for connections to Db2 12 at APPLCOMPAT levels higher than V12R1M500? Specifically when using gateway servers?

I know you need to be at very current levels of the client / gateway / JDBC driver. I have Data Studio working going directly to Db2 without a gateway, but no luck with non-JDBC connections or even JDBC connections via a gateway. The documentation I have found so far is... well it's written by IBM.

Any help would be appreciated.

I still suggest you (and David) should add your firewall concerns to the Aha idea I posted. It's new to me so there is some probability it's new to development also.

BTW, how do they handle other incoming connections such as TSO?

Sorry, just teasing: do they have a TSO gateway to avoid opening up firewall for TSO users? :)

It’s not what other database offer, it’s what IBM is taking away from what they offered. It’s not my complaint. I’ve encouraged the customer to go direct to Db2. However, they disagree with me and it is not in the customer’s plans. I’ll see if I can make the mod to the request, but I am NOT a customer and have been told several times that I have very very little influence as to enhancements. I think I might have exaggerated that claim. I believe I meant to say next to no influence. Sorry, it must be a Monday.

RE: Db2 12 and Db2 Connect
(in response to David Simpson)

Hi David,

Until you have the mentioned APAR on, your client has to specify clientApplCompat if the package on Db2 12 is bound with APPLCOMPAT V12R1M501 or higher.

It does not matter whether clientApplCompat itself is set the same value: V12R1M500 will work.

Good luck!

Mark

(in response to David Simpson)
So… an update on this for those interested. We applied the fix for PH08482 (which is still warm from being baked). With VERY current versions of the client / JDBC driver we are able to connect to higher function levels without setting the ClientApplcompat. With this APAR applied it will default to the APPLCOMPAT of the client packages you are using. This seems so very common sensical that it should have always been that way .

This has the side effect of allowing you to continue using a Db2 Connect gateway server as long as you can take the APPLCOMPAT value from the client packages.

Many thanks Jørn for pointing me in the right direction.

Thanks for the APAR. I'm reading it now.

When I try to run the SET CURRENT APPLICATION COMPATIBILITY in the CLP I get the -30025. Client packages are bound V12R1M503.

I’m assuming you are using the NULLID packages? If so, then this solution works for a homogenous application environment only. Yes? Of course, you can also set up all the other applications to use a lower application level if needed. Unless, of course, they also go through a gateway.

Db2 12 and Db2 Connect
(in response to Daniel Luksetich)
I believe IBM’s recommendation is to set up multiple collections with the CLI packages… one for each supported function level. You can then set the default by changing the collection you are using. This works with or without a gateway, no?

I’m assuming you are using the NULLID packages? If so, then this solution works for a homogenous application environment only. Yes? Of course, you can also set up all the other applications to use a lower application level if needed. Unless, of course, they also go through a gateway.

On a related note, any wisdom on how to set clientApplcompat for CLP sessions that do NOT use a gateway?

It’s not what other database offer, it’s what IBM is taking away from what they offered. It’s not my complaint. I’ve encouraged the customer to go direct to Db2. However, they disagree with me and it is not in the customer’s plans. I’ll see if I can make the mod to the request, but I am NOT a customer and have been told several times that I have very very little influence as to enhancements. I think I might have exaggerated that claim. I believe I meant to say next to no influence. Sorry, it must be a Monday.

RE: Db2 12 and Db2 Connect
(in response to Daniel Luksetich)

Hi Dan,

I discussed this with Db2 Connect development and the answer is yes.

In order to exploit Db2 12 FLxxx DDL and SQL functionality when using a Db2 Connect gateway you need to:

  1. Apply PTF UI62392 on the Db2 for z/OS side (as discussed previously in this thread)
  2. Bind the Db2 Connect packages on the desired FL

Note that some Db2 connect specific enhancements for Db2 12 were only added to the client drivers and not the server, e.g., Db2 12 session token support.

If you want to control applcompat at the application level you can bind the Db2 Connect packages at the desired FL levels into different collections and use currentPackageSet on the client side to select the right collection. This option work with the Db2 connect server as well.

If you have the Db2 Connect unlimited edition you can use "db2connectactiviate" with the -bindoptions "APPLCOMPAT xxxx" to bind the packages as the desired FL; see https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/en/SSEPEK_12.0.0/apsg/src/tpc/db2z_applcompatclients.html. Alternatively use the new sample job DSNTIJLC.

I hope this helps!

In Reply to Daniel Luksetich:

This would be facilitated via currentPackageSet. Is this possible via a gateway?
