RE: Db2 12for z/OS DBA Certification survey
(in response to Philip Sevetson)

Hi,

The certification quiz has quite a high bar to entry.  It states under Minimum Competency

“This individual has significant experience as a DBA and extensive knowledge of Db2, including Db2 12 for z/OS Function Level 506.”

Not sure many sites will get to FL506 in production this year.

Regards,

Colin Raybould.

Db2 12for z/OS DBA Certification survey
(in response to Colin Raybould)
I was disappointed to see that there’s no opportunity for such general
comments in the survey. I would perhaps have questioned why topics such as
installation are part of a DBA certification exam at all.

On the other hand we have no idea how long it might be before the exam
becomes available. Maybe FL506 will be relatively old (if not actually
widespread) by then.

Db2 12for z/OS DBA Certification survey
(in response to Neil Price)
The certification test creation process is coordinated and methodical, as well as proctored the entire time. In the past the survey was always an internal effort performed by the certification team. Now, the public has a voice in the survey so let us have it! The goal is to have the exam ready for IDUG NA, but if you add up the features between FL501 and FL506 there is only a bit there, and we won’t be directly addresses things like ML. So, the FL506 thing is not a big deal in my opinion. Now, as far as the “high bar” and installation things goes, the quantity of questions in each section will be determined by the survey results, and the passing score will be determined during the Angoff process. I have Angoffed myself several times, and it is quite a painful process, so…you’re welcome. Seriously, during Angoff we will be ranking the difficulty and even tossing stuff that is ultimately too hard.

I hope this is incentive for more of you out there to do the survey.

Cheers,

Dan

RE: Db2 12for z/OS DBA Certification survey
(in response to Daniel Luksetich)

Agree with Neil. I wonder what roles the "DBA" does and what belongs to the DB2 Sysprog? I guess it can vary depending on size of the installation.

I took the survey but thought that is was all a bit too general to be greatly meaningful. My weak areas would probably be Sysprog areas, Comms DB fine details, and my Security knowledge might be below other areas (not my favourite topic).

Difference between "relevance" and "importance" was not totally clear to me. Can something be very important but not very relevant?

There has been a lot of discussion surrounding those roles. We do have several folks on the team that have done both exams so I think we are keeping it under control.

The purpose of the survey is to get public opinion about the distribution of questions. The more people that participate the better, obviously. Previous distributions for the DBA exam were approximately 10% system stuff, 6% security, and the rest all DBA. I too struggled with relevance versus importance.

Thanks,

Dan

Db2 12for z/OS DBA Certification survey
(in response to Daniel Luksetich)
I took it to be the difference between being relevant to the role of Database Administrator, as opposed to how important it was to have those skills.. Not much of a difference I grant you. Is it relevant a DBA knows how to install DB2? Maybe not. But is it important? You betcha.

Survey completed. I think a good DBA needs at least awareness of all those components, installation included. Most sites I’ve been at/seen are now so large you’ll be lucky to find someone who knows a reasonable amount about all those areas, as you tend to get assigned to one or two in particular – performance, design, support, storage, etc. I think a DBA should be a jack-of-all-trades and a master of as many as they can be. Unfortunately specialising makes passing a generalist exam a little harder. But maybe that’s partly the point.

Cheers,

Raymond
