Frank J. Ingrassia is an internationally-recognized DB2 consultant and
educator. He has spent most of the last 14 years studying the DB2
optimizer in detail. Outside of IBM and the people who design and
write the code, he probably has a better handle on the actual
processes and cost estimations than just about anybody else
out there. He has also published and presented numerous papers
on the subject and is regarded by his peers as the "Optimizer Expert."

This is the ultimate one-day crash course on the DB2 OS/390 optimizer
and its access path selection algorithms. The discussion is "current" to
Versions 5 and 6 and will take the attendees through the entire realm of
the optimization process. With key catalog statistics used as input to
the 8 (of 12) Explain tables available for output, all the relevant
topics will be laid out and dissected, including predicate filter
factors, predicate and query transformations, optimizer cost
formulas for CPU, I/O, Sort, Compression, Tablespace Scans,
Index Scans, and more. Converting raw costs into Timerons,
the impact of parallelism, multi-table joins and subqueries --
virtually everything you ever wanted to know about optimization
is here. The seminar also includes some helpful hints on how
to apply this acquired knowledge of DB2's internals to both
understanding and influencing the DB2 optimizer's decision
process. This course is applicable for DBAs, developers,
and designers.

(See for more information about
the class and comments from previous attendees.)
