IDUG NA Db2 Tech Conference 2019 Wrap Up

2019 IDUG Db2 Tech Conference in Charlotte

The 2019 IDUG Db2 Tech Conference in Charlotte, NC drew more than 500 attendees from across the globe, reflecting an increased attendance compared to the 2018 event. Attendees gathered to learn, share best practices, and connect with fellow Db2 technologists during educational sessions, networking events, workshops, and more.

More than 100 technical sessions, hands-on-training labs, educational seminars (EdSems), and panel discussions offered attendees the chance to learn from industry experts. This year’s conference featured both an opening and closing session with two keynote addresses featuring speakers Rob Thomas, General Manager of IBM Data and AI and Al Martin, VP of Hybrid Platform Development of IBM to kick off the conference with the keynote address, “The Journey to AI with Db2.” The week closed with four star speakers—Anjali Arora of Rocket Software, John Mertic of the Linux Foundation, David Stokes of Broadcom, and Per Kroll of IBM—discussing “Building Next-Gen Applications with IBM Db2 and Zowe™.”

    High Marks

Attendees provided positive feedback on this year’s event. When asked about the best part of the conference on the evaluation form, comments included “being able to exchange problems and solutions directly with key IBM personnel” and “technical session and access to experts.” There were also many comments regarding presentations by user speakers. For example, one attendee’s favorite part of the conference was “hearing the user presentations and how my peers handle the types of challenges I face at work.”

New in 2019 – Two New Tracks!

    A Day for Zowe™

The Open Mainframe Project, which aims to develop shared open-source tool sets and resources for the mainframe, launched Zowe™ last August. Zowe™ is a new open-source software framework that bridges the divide between modern applications and the mainframe, providing easier interoperability and scalability among products and solutions from multiple vendors. Zowe™ is the first open-source project based on z/OS and an exciting step forward for the mainframe community. The conference included five specialty sessions for Zowe™.

    Db2 V11.5

The conference also included a whole track dedicated to the new release of Db2 11.5. Session topics included AI, pureScale, BLU, HADR, performance and scalability, continuous availability, developer focus and strategy, architecture deep dives, tooling updates, and the Db2 portfolio roadmap.
